I kept the Longest Night vigil the other night, something I've been wanting to do since I was about eleven, but was only allowed to do this year because apparently conforming to pagan ritual is only acceptable when it's stolen and rebadged in a sanitised version. And it was less allowed than Mum throwing up her hands and noting that I'll be eighteen in a month and can do whatever the hell I please. Damn straight.

I didn't keep the fire going, because that seemed wasteful for just me, but I had a candle. When it started to snow around three it was just so beautiful outside, and I opened the window, and then the candle blew out, which actually just made everything more beautiful and still. I relit the candle by wand, and that seemed... fitting. Affirming. My magic - my will - pushing back the darkness and confirming life on the darkest night of the year. We make light and warmth in the world by our choices and determination. It's something to carry into the new year.

Merry Christmas; bring some light. I'm off to help Mum with the mince pies.

What is a Longest Night vigil and why are you conforming to pagan rituals?

Staying awake on midwinter - the longest night of the year - to watch the sun come up. And why not? Aren't you?

Why? And... no?

At base, to make sure it does come up.

No? Are you sure? Don't have a Christmas tree? Hang mistletoe?

Uh. Okay. Everyone's got their own holiday celebrations, I guess. Sounds a lot better than what I do.

...yes?

This totally isn't a family thing. Mum thinks I'm a lunatic and Dad just says, "Whatever makes you happy, dear," and goes back to reading Which Broomstick? But I think it's important to be in touch with what a tradition is actually about, as opposed to what everyone does.

Then you're conforming to pagan rituals right there. Without even knowing it.

23rd Jan. The big one-eight when I can vote in Muggle elections. If I can figure out an address the electoral roll will support.

Nice! You're practically on Epiphany. Wait, you ARE an epiphany!

You really, really don't. Hugs and best wishes are the universal currency.

Damn. If I'd stuck to the inside of my mum's womb for one more day, I could claim all the Epiphany parties were on my behalf. Sorry, J.C. and the Magi.

My favourite kind of friendship: the cheap kind. You doing anything for your grand day of birthing?

Aside from part of your heritage? Traditionally, it's keeping the Yule Log burning throughout midwinter night. It's got connotations of making sure the sun does come back up again, but mostly it's just a really good chance for reflection and meditation upon the year-that-was.

It really was. Very still. I'd like to really do it "properly" next year, with more people, and a proper bonfire to keep burning through the night. Maybe even outside, but I'm not going to be stupid about it. I don't even know where I'll be this time next year, though.

Will you be doing more fundraisers for charities next term? I think it was a fantastic idea and I see no reason why it should stop just because the ball is over.

[info]rejoyce

Maybe. Maybe not. A plain old charity drives lacks the secondary motivation of trying to get people to think differently about social conventions they're far too willing to follow like well-behaved sheep. Also I have NEWTs to study for. But if you feel strongly about it, what's stopping you from taking your own action?

That's why I was asking. If you were planning to continue fundraising for charities, then I didn't want to overstep boundaries, but if you're too busy, I'd love to take over. Are you sure you wouldn't mind?

It's just wood. It's not really in demand. Plus, you can just get the magic kind that never burns out.

But think of all the broomsticks they could make out of it!

Or I could just curl up in a blanket. The magic kind, that keeps me warm.

Huh. Good point. Use the shitty wood that's useless for broomsticks.

Or that, but the fire seems cooler.
